Today was one of those random “I feel like shooting” days, so my photog friend Winston recommended we head to Virginia Key Beach to check out a few of his favorite spots. I had never been but I was amazed to see that VKB was one of Miami’s hidden treasures. Not only was it the first beach accessible to blacks back in the 50′s but its also home to Jimbo’s. For those who don’t know, Jimbo’s is actually a piece of waterfront property “owned” by an 85 year-old sailor who goes by the same name. Jimbo was originally a squatter but had lived on the property so long that he legally owned it according to Florida squatting law. Basically, the property is Jimbo’s for as long as he lives and he has become a local legend to the many visitors who stop by to grab a beer, play botchky ball and tour the area.
Now after saying all that, I’m sure you were expecting a dozen pictures of the legendary Jimbo buuuuut….. my camera battery died
. So for now you’ll have to deal with the iPhone pics and few other random shot from the day. I promise a full story soon.
